EardrumsPop » Illustrator Interview: Julia Pax
Julia Pax is a German illustrator who collaborated on making the cover for "Between Two Waves" volume B. She also made the lovely booklet for the same compilation. Here is our interview with her:
1. Can you give me a short presentation of yourself and your art?
Hello, I'm Julia. I'm a graphic designer and illustrator. I run my own young design studio, where I work together with my partner Ronald, who's a filmmaker.
2. What are you working on right now?
I do a lot of work for various clients at the moment, for example the design of posters, brochures or book-covers. Besides, I always try to work on some personal projects and illustrations.
3. What are your favourite tools?
Whenever possible, I use mixed analogue techniques like painting, sewing or papercutting. Finishing and fine-tuning is computer-based, of course.
4. How do you begin / conceptualise a project?
Well, every project is different and therefore needs an individual approach. In most cases, I start with a close research to get familiar with the particular subject.
5. Who / what are your greatest Visual Inspirations?
There are a lot of great and inspiring artists around the world and thanks to some great museums and the Internet they're quite easy to explore. But I also take much inspiration from old things, like old houses, old furniture, paintings of »old« artists (especially the classic modern period) … I have travelled a bit an lived abroad for some time, and this can also be an aspect of inspiration.
6. Is music or other forms of art an inspiration? If so, what do you listen to?
Yes, of course. I like songs with melodic elements and interesting voices, very much like the EardrumsPop-style. And then, I also like Swing.
7. Describe an average working day.
After getting up, I read my e-mails and look a little bit for news around the internet. Then I have breakfast and when I finish, it's about time for some telephone calls. I often start creative work in the afternoon.
8. What are your future plans? Any exciting things you are looking forward to?
I'd like to develop our studio further … do some more illustration based projects, and maybe during the next year, work on another fictional short film.
9. What question and answer would you like to end this interview with?
Are you available for freelance work on an international basis, too?
Yes
